SOMOZA(そもざ）Opens June 2nd, 2017(Fri) at Hanazono in Niseko
SOMOZA(そもざ）is the latest project by Shouya Grigg, founder of Zaborin Ryokan and director of Sekka Style. Somoza is a 150 year old Japanese Kominka, that has been relocated to the untouched landscape of Hanazono in Kutchan town, Niseko. The interiors, exterior finishes, creative touches and landscaping, all feature Shouya’s creative design elements.
There is an expansive gallery space and shop, that features art work and collectables selected by Shouya’s keen eye. The aptly named “Doma” dining area is perfect for relaxing and enjoying the surroundings with friends and family and is open for lunches during the day and in the evenings becomes the location for an outstanding “Chefs Table” dinner, that highlights the best of local produce. In the attic space above the shop is a traditional Japanese Tea room and in the basement there is a large Gallery space, which can accommodate up to 50 people for meetings and events.
During the year a variety of events are planned for Somoza, for more details please check the website. As an event and communication space, the entire building or portions of the building can be rented out. Contact us for further information.
SOMOZA (そもざ) STORY
Somoza’s was originally located in a post village in Tochigi prefecture, between Odawara Shuku and Sakuyama Shuku along side the famed Ōshū Kaidō (One of the five trading routes of the Edo period). The kominka was originally built over 150 years ago and had been home to many generations of the same family.
The owner had aged and could no longer live in the family home, Shouya had been searching for a kominka to relocate and upon hearing about the building, visited Tochigi and met with the owner. After several negotiations with the owner the decision was made to move the building to Hanazono, where it has been
transformed into Somoza. The transformation of the structure not only captures 150 years of history for future generations to wonder at, every space features the design sense and prowess of Shouya Grigg.
