Onsen & Relaxation

Activities > Onsen & Relaxation
Activities	Other Services

Due to the proximity of Niseko to a volcano, the area is home to a high concentration of onsens (hot springs). Bathers do not wear any clothing and for the Japanese people this is an important part of their culture. Bath houses throughout the region strive to make their onsen as natural as they can to enable people to relax and leave their stress behind. The water temperature varies according to location but is usually around 40 degrees centigrade.

One particular characteristic of an onsen is the rotenburo – an outdoor bathing pool that will often feature a Japanese style garden or look out onto unspoiled countryside. The minerals such as sodium, calcium and magnesium contained in the waters are said to be effective against a variety of ailments.

Onsen Etiquette
Purchase your tickets at the reception desk. Security lockers are available and are usually located in the reception area or changing rooms.

Enter the changing area which is clearly marked: Men 男 (blue) and Women 女 (red). Leave your shoes or slippers in the cubicles provided by the changing room door. Clothes should be placed in the baskets provided.

You should have two towels when you visit an onsen - a small modesty towel and a large bath towel. If you are a day visitor towels may be available for purchase. The large bath towel should be left in your basket and the small bath towel taken into the bathing area.

Bathing
Step 1 : Wash your body before entering the baths. There are stools and cubicles around the edge of the room. Sit at a cubical and wash thoroughly using either the body soap and shampoo provided. You can use the small privacy towel to apply soap to the body and scrub.

Step 2 : Use the shower, tap and small tub provided to rinse the soap from your body.
Sit down when you use the shower and try not to splash the people around you. When you leave the cubicle it is polite to rinse the seat.

Step 3 : When you are walking around, hold the modesty towel in front of you. Pools are only for soaking and must not be used for swimming or washing clothing. Place the modesty towel on your head or on the side of the bath but remember not to put it in the water.

Step 4 : Before leaving the wet area use the small modesty towel to dry as much of the excess water off your body as possible. Wring out the towel before returning to the changing room. Used towels can be placed in the collection basket provided or returned to reception.
