Summer Activities
Climbing / Trekking
This area is surrounded by mountains and abounds with a variety of walks to suit all tastes and abilities. It features a wealth of trails for hikers to enjoy. For strong climbers there are courses up Mt. Yotei, which is counted among Japan's top one hundred mountains, or courses that traverse the Niseko mountain range. For less experienced climbers there are plenty of trails to be enjoyed by Lake Shinsen-numa or around the upper wetland area.
Rafting / Canoeing
The Shiribetsu River is a fairly gentle river and lends itself easily to rafting, canoeing and other watersports. However, from April to May, the melting snow swells the river transforming it into a raging torrent and offers a thrilling descent. There are many outdoor adventure companies in the Niseko area that offer rafting and canoeing and even beginners can enjoy the challenge the river presents.
Fishing
The Shiribetsu River is famous for its rare Japanese huchen but, due to a decline in numbers, it is no longer a target for anglers. Other fish such as the Rainbow trout, Red-spotted masu salmon, Japanese char are popular among anglers, and attract those who enjoy fly and lure fishing.
Other Outdoor Activities
The above activities are but a small selection of what the Niseko area has to offer. Visitors can also enjoy mountain biking, canyoning, birdwatching, nature treks, paragliding, golf to name but a few and, for those wishing to accept the challenge offered by the mountains, there is always the freedom of the backcountry.
While we want visitors to enjoy themselves, outdoor sports entail certain risks. So, when choosing an activity please select a level of difficulty that best suits your abilities.
