FIS Snowboard Cross
Apr 06, 2011
Niseko HANAZONO Resort hosted two FIS (Fédération Internationale de Ski) Snowboard-Cross competitions last weekend.
Snowboard Cross is a four-man race, all riders aiming to be the first to cross the finish line of a course peppered with obstacles such as jumps, rollers, steep banks, step-ups, and more.
Snowboard Cross has been an official Olympic event since the Torino Olympics in 2006.
One of the spectators said that the series of monster jumps and canyon-like rollers made the competitions really exciting to watch.
Even though I just watched the course from the finishing area, I was overwhelmed looking up the gigantic rollers.
With many competitions cancelled following the Tohoku -Pacific earthquake on March 11th, these were the last FIS official events this winter and most of Japan’s elite snowboarders came to compete.
Contrary to the weather forcast , we even got some sunshine and bluebird skies on the last day. It was an exciting race day!
The photo above shows the medalists of the Hokkaido Championship race on the 2nd day. Daisuke Watanabe, a local Hirafu rider, took 3rd place. Congratulations, Daisuke!
