Winter Activities

Winter activities in the Niseko area

nighter1Frequently referred to as a ‘winter wonderland’, Niseko’s unique location makes it a “must-see must-ski” hotspot for winter sports enthusiasts.  Snow covers the ground for approximately 130 days and the average seasonal snowfall is in excess of 10m.  Visitors to Niseko will not be disappointed by the winter snow conditions nor can they fail to be impressed with the ever-increasing amount of winter activities.  Although skiing and snowboarding are the most popular choices, for the more adventurous among you, we recommend cat-skiing, snowmobiling or snow rafting.

Skiing and snowboarding

2skierssmallNiseko is regarded as one of Japan’s premier ski resorts due to both the amount and type of powder snow and is fast becoming one of the most popular winter destinations in the world.  With wide open courses, tree runs, backcountry, off-piste, first tracks and night-skiing, Niseko caters for all levels from beginner to expert.  For those wishing to go that little bit further, hiking trails lead from the highest lifts to the summit.  An extensive lift system ce382b4e383b3e38389e383a9efbc91overs the 64 courses and includes gondolas and covered chairlifts. With the lifts meeting at the summit, skiers have access to Grand Hirafu, Niseko Village and Annupuri resorts which combine to make Niseko United, one of the largest ski areas in Hokkaido.

Snowmobiling

If you like action but would like to give your legs a rest from skiing or snowboarding, try snowmobiling. There are a large variety of courses on offer both at the foot of the mountain and further afield. Whether you are looking for a scenic ride though the forest or an adventurous tour through knee-deep powder and steep terrain ? Niseko has it all.

Terrain park

Niseko has a large, well-maintained terrain park with rails, kickers, a variety of different sized table tops for all levels and a great half pipe, most of which are situated in the Hanazono ski area. Popular with both skiers and snowboarders, the park attracts a wide range of riders thanks to a well thought out design and the lack of crowds.

Horse riding

Although horse riding is traditionally a summer activity, Niseko encourages visitors to take the opportunity to enjoy horse riding as a winter sport. The relaxing scenic rides through glistening woodland and along snow covered trails are enchanting.

Snow rafting and snow tubing

snow-rafting07

A popular winter sport great for kids and adults. A snowmobile tows you around a course while you are sitting in a rubber raft. Fast runs and gentle tows mean this sport is great fun for thrill seekers, non-skiers or families.

Snow shoeing

snowshoe71Surrounded by beautiful countryside, Niseko is the ideal location for snow shoeing and exploring the great outdoors. Away from the bustling village, visitors can trek through snow-covered forests and explore scenic countryside, quiet backwaters and ice-covered lakes. This gentle approach to nature takes visitors into the heart of the Hokkaido countryside and is a very good way to get close to the native flora and fauna, some of which is unique to the island, without disturbing its fragile habitat.
